What type of material should I choose?

When deciding between materials there are 3 things you should take into consideration:

1. What area of your home are you wanting new countertops for?
2. How much maintenance are you willing to do?
3. What is your budget?

Areas
Granite is a great option for high traffic areas/ outside. It is a very durable material that stands up well to heat, stains, and scratching.Quartz is another great option for high traffic areas as it is durable, stain resistant, and scratch resistant. Keep in mind that quartz is only heat resistant up to a certain degree so we recommend using a hot pad when placing items on countertops. Avoid placing hot pans directly on quartz countertops.Avoid materials such as marble for high traffic areas since it is very porous, and is more susceptible to staining and scratching

Maintenance
Natural porous materials such as granite, marble, quartzite, limestone, and onyx require annual sealingNatural non pourous material such as soapstone does not need to be sealed. There is special formulated soapstone mineral oil that can be applied to the material.Engineered material: Quartz does not require sealing as it is not a porous material.

Budget*
Standard granite* is a great option if you are wanting to upgrade your countertops and are  looking for a budget friendly material.Other materials such as quartz, marble, quartzite, and soapstone will cost more than standard granite. Price per sqft for these materials will vary depending on the size, layout, and material chosen for your project.

At Bedrock Countertops we understand that the decision to want to upgrade your space is important and we want to help you along the way. We offer free estimates for your project.

What's the difference between granite and marble?

Granite and Marble are both natural materials, so what makes them different?
Granite and marble are both porous stones that require sealing. Marble is softer (more porous) than granite so it is more susceptible to scratching and staining. While both materials are heat resistant, marble is not suited for high traffic areas like a kitchen. Also granite and marble have each have a different property make up which contribute to the look of each material.

Is marble more expensive than granite?
Yes, Marble on average does cost more than granite.

What is marble so sought after if it scratches and stains easily?
Simple: Marble is a beautiful. While marble does scratch easily and is susceptible to staining homeowners often can look past that for the simple fact that they like how marble looks. Every project is different and level of maintenance you are willing to do is entirely up to you.

Granite vs marble : pros and cons
Pros
• Granite is durable and long lasting. Granite is a hard material, which means it stands up to cuts and drops.
• Granite is heat resistant, which means hot pots and pans can go directly on the surface without damaging the countertop.

Cons
• Porous, since granite is a porous stone it will absorb moisture if not sealed correctly
• Limited colors, especially for standard granite
• Maintenance Required: granite requires annual sealing to protect the stone and also so limit the amount of moisture absorbed by countertop

Marble
Pros
• Very beautiful and unique
• If taken care of marble can be long lasting
• Well maintained marble can increase property value

Cons
• Expensive
• Marble is a porous, stains easily, high maintenance surface
• Susceptible to etching ( prolonged exposure to acid)
• Marble is much softer compared to other stones such as granite, quartzite
• High maintenance: scratches, stains, needs to be sealed.

What is book matching?

Book matching refers to matching two or more slabs of stone, so that the two adding surfaces mirror each other, like an open book.

Can any stone be book matched?

No, it will depend on the characteristics of the material.  Marble is very common since book matching does work best when the material has strong veins, linear patters or a lot of movement.

Will you remove my mirror?

We do not remove or reattach mirrors. We are not liable for mirrors that are broken while countertops are being removed/installed. We highly suggest mirrors be removed prior to countertop removal/install.

Do you offer plumbing?

Bedrock Countertops does not offer plumbing services.

What is the price for each material?

Each material varies in price. Price per square feet for material that is not standard is all dependent on the size, layout of your project and the material you choose. At Bedrock Countertops we provide free estimates!

How do I clean my countertops?

Gentle soap and water! Avoid harsh chemicals when cleaning your countertops as those can strip away the sealer on natural stone.

How thick is a slab?

Bedrock Countertops works with natural material that is 3cm in thickness. Quartz comes in two different thicknesses 2 cm and 3 cm. Not all quartz comes in a 2cm thickness, verify with your sales representative if the quartz you want comes in the thickness you desire.

Granite vs Marble vs Quartz

Granite, marble, and quartz are among the three most popular options on the market.

Granite (Natural Stone)

• Maintenance Required, granite requires annual sealing to protect the stone and also so limit the amount of moisture absorbed by countertop

Marble (Natural Stone)
Pros
• Very beautiful and unique
• If taken care of marble can be long lasting
• Well maintained marble can increase property value

Cons
• Expensive- depending on the type of marble you choose prices range from $75+ per sqft.
• Marble is a porous, stains easily, high maintenance surface
• Susceptible to etching (prolonged exposure to acidic items such as tomatoes and lemons)
• Marble is much softer compared to other stones such as granite, quartzite
• High maintenance: scratches, stains, needs to be sealed.

Quartz (Engineered Material)
Pros
• Non-porous so it resist staining better than a porous material such as granite
• Resistant to scratching
• Does not require sealing

Cons
• Not as heat resistant as granite or other natural stone. Always use a hot pad when placing hot items on quartz countertops. Avoid placing a hot item directly on to the countertop.

What are Countertops seams?

Countertop seams occur when joining two separate pieces to form a larger countertop. For many projects seams may be unavoidable but that is all dependent on the size and layout of the project. The type of material you choose may also affect the amount of seams that your project will require.

The truth about countertop seams

Seams on countertops will always be visible. There are many factors that have to be taken into consideration and that affect how many seams your project will need. We do not claim that our seams will be non existent but our team of installers will work diligently to conceal seams to the best of their ability.

Which is better? Polished vs Honed

Polished
• Polished material does not scratch as easily as honed material.
• Polished material shows imperfections more than a honed material would because it is more reflective

Honed
• Honed material is much softer, and as a result it can be scratched easier than polished material.
• Honed material is non reflective, and as a result it hides imperfections better than a polished material

Polished provides more protection to your countertops but shows imperfections. Honed does not provide the amount of protection that a polished countertop would have but hides imperfections better as it is non reflective.
